Private Label Coffee 101: A Startup's Guide to OEM Roasting
Launching a private-label coffee brand without your own roaster is one of the fastest ways to get a product to market — but only if you ask the right questions of your OEM partner up front.
Start With the Green Coffee, Not the Bag
Before discussing packaging, confirm the underlying green coffee: origin, process, SCA score and available lot sizes. A private label coffee bean supplier for startups should be able to offer a small selection of base lots (for example, a washed, a natural and a commercial-grade option) so you can build a simple, differentiated lineup.
Roast Profile Development
A good OEM coffee beans private label manufacturer will develop 2–3 roast curve options against your target cup profile and send roasted samples for approval before any production run — don't accept "we'll roast it medium" without a sample first.
Packaging and Branding
Custom coffee roasting services wholesale typically offer a range of bag formats (valve pouches, flat-bottom bags, various sizes) and can print your own branding at a minimum order threshold — ask what that threshold is early, since it often drives your total MOQ more than the coffee itself.
Typical MOQ for a First Run
Many suppliers will accommodate a smaller trial run (60–100kg green equivalent) for a new brand's first production, scaling to container volumes as the brand grows — confirm this explicitly rather than assuming container-only terms apply.
Getting Started
Bring a rough brief — target flavor profile, bag format, order size — and ask for a sample-to-production timeline in writing.
